Race to rescue skiers after avalanche in Austria
Police initially suggested that 10 people had been buried under snow near the ski resort of Lech-Zuers in the west of the country.
But officials later said six had escaped without injury and two others had been flown to regional hospitals.
Avalanches are common in Austria. Rescuers say they will continue their search until everyone is located.
Helicopters and rescue dogs are involved in the effort.
“We are doing everything we can to rescue the winter sports enthusiasts,” the Austrian Press Agency quotes the municipality of Lech as saying.
The avalanche happened at about 15:00 local time (16:00 GMT) at an altitude of 2,700m (8,858ft).
